Mazatlan 2015 Day 4 - Cocktails
Wednesday, April 1, 2015
Back at the condo, which I've now named nido de tortuga (nest of the turtle), we poured cocktails and sat on the balcony. I made a Tanqueray martini. There was no shaker in the cupboards so I made due with a makeshift one. Caught the sunset again. Always amazing. It's only when I see it dip below the horizon that I get the sense that the earth is turning. Dale grilled chicken breast for dinner. We also sautéed some asparagus.
Mazatlan 2015 Day 4 - Cows
Wednesday, April 1, 2015
While driving back to EDM we noticed a dog jump up into the middle of the road. He ran toward a truck which was moving very slowly just a bit ahead of him. A man was following closely behind the dog and the truck. Just ahead of them was a herd of cows trotting along. They moving by the entryway to EDM within a couple of feet. Above was one of the cows that wasn't quite caught up to the rest of the group.
Mazatlan 2015 Day 4 - Love Child
Wednesday, April 4, 2015
Lunch at La Paloma on the golf course. This time we got the shrimp ceviche to start. I got what Dale had last time, the mango glazed fish. Dale got the tuna. After lunch we drove in to the city for cigars and food. At the mall I discovered what I think is the love child of Señor Frog and Hello Kitty.
Mazatlan 2015 Day 4 - Beach
Wednesday, April 1, 2015
Regular morning routine. I'm sick of routines at home but I love the one we've fallen into here. Right now Dale and I are sitting under one of the thatched roof umbrellas out on the beach.

Mazatlan 2015 Day 3 - Cathedral of Mazatlan
Tuesday, March 31, 2015
Finally, before heading to Mega we stopped at the Cathedral of Mazatlan. Very beautiful. I got a lot of great pics. In the courtyard we came across a statue of Juan Diego revealing the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe to the priest. Dale didn't know the story so I filled him in.

Mazatlan 2015 Day 3 - Freeman Hotel
Tuesday, March 31, 2015
We drove into Mazatlan and spent a little time in the old part of the city. Our first stop was the Freeman Hotel which was recommended to us by John & Dianne. The hotel has a wonderful bar with a panoramic views on the 11th floor and then a pool and patio on the roof just above that. I ordered a pina colada and Dale had a beer. We also ordered a late lunch there. Dale had fish and I had shrimp.
Mazatlan 2015 Day 3 - Las Tortugas
Tuesday, March 31, 2015
Same morning routine as usual. I love drinking coffee on the balcony.

Walked over to the turtle sanctuary this morning. Was disappointed to find the turtles weren't there. A guy aaas cleaning their tank so I'm assuming they just moved them.

Took a walk to the beach with Dale to watch the setting sun around 6 p.m. Officially the sun set at 6:19. I don't think I've watched a sunset since our time here last year.

Mazatlan 2015 Day 2 - A Little Lunch
Monday, March 30, 2015
Dale and I went to lunch at La Paloma which is on the golf course here at the resort. We ordered the fish ceviche which, just like last year, was awesome.
Mazatlan 2015 Day 2 - Morning Routine
Monday, March 30, 2015
Dale and I are falling pretty easily into the same routine we developed last year. We started with cogged and then breakfast on the balcony. Dale had a short Facetime meeting with a colleague between coffee and breakfast. After that Dale took a run and I took my morning walk along the beach. I'm sitting at a poolside table while writing this. Dale should be joining me shortly and then I'll take a swim.

Mazatlan 2015 Day 1 - Cigar In the Hot Tub
Saturday, March 29, 2015
Headed out to the hot tub around 8 p.m. so I could light up a cigar. This flibbertigibbet of a tween and her grandmother jumped in before us. I'm somewhat sensitive about subjecting others to my cigar smoke in close areas so Dale and I sat on pool chairs near the hot tub's edge waiting for them to leave. They didn't. By 8:30 I lit up hoping to smoke them out. They still didn't leave. The girl babbled on and on about how she wanted to ride her boogie board, go swimming, eat ice cream , and entertain her cousins at Thanksgiving. The grandma finally said goodnight to her probably thinking th girl would go home too. She didn't. I'm sure she would haver started talking our ears off too if the grandma hadn't insisted that she go home and go to bed. The girl finally flitted off. Must be tough being a kid of privilege. Anyway, the cigar in the hot tub was worth the wait.
Mazatlan 2015 Day 1 - Arrival
Saturday, March 29, 2015
After landing, Dale picked up our car. We dropped our stuff off at EDM and then ventured in to Mazatlan. First we stopped at Sanbournes's so I could pick up a couple cigars. We then went to Mega and picked up a couple days worth of groceries. The town seemed more quiet than usual. Maybe because it was Sunday afternoon.
We made it back to EDM by 5 p.m., just in time for cocktail hour. Dale drank beer and I drank gin and tonics. We made tuna melts and frozen vegetables for dinner.

Mazatlan 2015 Day 1 - Take Off
Sunday, March 29, 2015
Mom picked us up this morning to take us to the airport. We're flying first class again this year and I must say, the more I fly it the more spoiled I get. Checking in was oh, so easy and once on the plane I ordered a mimosa before we took off. Lunch was tasty and then I drank a couple Jack and Cokes. Glying above the clouds was gorgeous. At times it liked like a snowy landscape. Flying above the mountains in Mexico was breath taking. Dale said the range was the Sierra Madres. I was verklempt.

Leaving Tomorrow

So Long, California
Sunday, March 22, 2015
Scott, Milton, Warren, and I all went out for breakfast this morning. After that Warren got me to the airport in San Jose. It was hard to say goodbye as this is one of the most fun weekend getaways I've had. EVER.
Nick's Restaurant
Saturday, March 21, 2015
After our adventure in the city, Warren, Scott, and I met Milton at Nick's in Pacifica, CA for dinner. What a fabulous retro place. Scott was adorable in his enjoyment of the place. He was very much in the moment. The place is a true supper club in that in addition to food and drinks they offer live music and dancing.
After Nick's we relaxed some more in the hot tub.
The Castro and Harvey Milk
Saturday, March 21, 2015
I found the plaque of Harvey Milk on the sidewalk of the Castro and Scott pointed out where Harvey's camera store was. It's now a Human Rights Campaign office. You can see a painting of Harvey in the second story window. I've heard he lived above the store.
Scott and Warren

Scott and Warren are in the bottom center of the photo. Taken as we walked toward the Twin Peaks bar just up the street on the corner.
Saturday In the City
Saturday, March 21, 2015
On Saturday Scott, Warren, and I went in to San Francisco to see The Witches of East Bay at the Castro Theater. The show was a take-off on the movie The Witches of Eastwick but with drag queens. It was hysterical how over the top the guy who played Jack Nicholson was. They showed the movie after and we stayed for that as well. I haven't seen the movie since the 80s and realized the guy doing Jack's part really wasn't over the top at all.
Prior to the show we stopped at the bar on the corner just half a block up from the theater. The bar is called Twin Peaks and here is what the website San Francisco Travel had to say about it:
Twin Peaks Tavern (401 Castro Street)
Established: 1935An emblem of the gay community, Twin Peaks was designated an historical bar in 2013. The bar is the first known gay bar to feature full length open plate glass windows, openly revealing the identities of their patrons. Sitting at the intersection of Castro and Market Streets, Twin Peaks stands as a gateway into the neighborhood.
Outside the bar was (I assume) a homeless woman. She had a suitcase and her dog with her and it looked like she was accepting change from folks. Anyway, a man came up and gave her some food for her dog. She lit into him and started screaming "I don't accept dog food from bitches!" Oddly, she sounded exactly like the character Pensatucky from the show Orange Is the New Black. Scott informed me that nudists have taken to walking around the city. He wasn't kidding. I saw one just after he mentioned it.

Sonny
Friday, March 20, 2015
I had a chance to meet Scott and Milton's new dog Sonny. I really came to like him even though upon first seeing me he jumped up and started knawing at my ankles (I had shorts on) with his sharp puppy teeth. Scott and Milton had been working on trying to break him of that habit and gave me permission to get on his case if he did it. After we worked through that he really, like I said, grew on me. He's quite a cutie.
Milton's Birthday Party
Friday, March 20, 2015
A good part of the early and later afternoon was getting set up for Milton's birthday dinner. It was fun to have a chance to watch Warren cook. I've come to believe that cooking and entertaining people with the food he makes is one of his greatest pleasures. Usually I just see the tail end of his preparation when I'm over for dinner. It was fun to watch him go through the process of putting the rub on the Puerto Rican version of a pork roast he was making but also just watching him tend to it. Scott introduced me to a new gin called The Botanist. He told me it would become a new favorite and he was right. He let me make a martini for him. I get as much of a charge with making drinks for people as Warren does for cooking for folks.
The birthday dinner party turned out to be just awesome. Milton's good friend Kevin was there along with a Kevin's boyfriend and another couple as well.
After dinner we spent some time relaxing in the hot tub.
