First Trip to Madeline Island for 2011 Part 3

Dale was given some time off and drove back home with me. We followed Alyn, Chris and Ellis to Superior and had lunch at Culver's. We then headed to Duluth and saw the train museum at the Depot. There was a lot to see. Ellis particularly enjoyed it because he loves trains. I really enjoyed it because my grandpa on my Mom's side worked for the Misabe Railroad. The Depot is no longer a functioning depot but houses and arts center and museums. The building was built in 1892. I remember Mom and Dad sending Sam and me up to Duluth in the late 1970s when Amtrak was still running trains up to Duluth. We'd go up to visit Baba and Grandpa in Two Harbors but they picked us up in Duluth as that was the end of the run. I loved that the two of us could be on our own. Mom and Dad gave us money to buy snacks. The dining car was more a snack shop as the run was only a few hours. We could buy things like pop, pizza, chips, etc. We'd eat the pizza at the tables in the dining car but bring things like chips and other snacks back to our seat. I remember Grandpa waiting for us on the platform when the train pulled into the Depot.

First Trip to Madeline Island for 2011 Part 2

Saturday
6-18-11

Woke up shortly after midnight to Dale's landlords, Dave and Mike, having a shouting match right outside our window. I must've fallen back to sleep because Dale told me the part I heard was just the beginning. They didn't quiet down until about 2 a.m.

It was nice to chat with Chris, Alyn, Ellis and Dale this morning while having coffee. Dale had to got to work around 10 o'clock. Chris, Alyn, and Ellis went to get a sweatshirt shortly after Dale left. I took a nice walk on my own with the intention of getting some photographs. I managed to get some good shots. The lilacs here are way behind the ones in Minneapolis. The ones back home are gone but the ones here are looking really good.

It sure is cold up here! It's not supposed to get up above the low 60s. At least yesterday it was sunny. I woke up this morning to discover it was cold and damp and that it had rained overnight. There was an in-line skating marathon here on the Island that began this morning. I felt bad for the participants that the weather was so cold and cloudy.

Took a nap this afternoon. We all went to the Beach Club for dinner. Dale and I both had the fish sandwich. Very delicious. It really makes a difference when the the fish comes out of the lake the day of.

First Trip to Madeline Island for 2011

Friday
6-17-11

Drove to Chris and Alyn's house in St. Paul and then drove up with them to Madeline Island to visit Dale. We took 35W North for a ways and then cut over into Wisconsin and picked up State Highway 63 and then headed to State Highway 13 to Bayfield. In Bayfield we took the ferry over to the Island. We picked up 63 in Spooner but stopped first for lunch at the River Street Family Restaurant. I had the mushroom and swiss burger with some really excellent fries

After arriving at the Island at about 4 p.m., we hung out at Dale's apartment until he got home from work. We went to The Pub for dinner. Dale and I both got fish. I always love getting fish up on the Island because it comes right out of the lake. We went to Grandpa Tony's after dinner to get ice cream. Ellis ordered "brown" (chocolate). We then hung out chatting at the apartment until bedtime. Chris and Alyn's son Ellis was occupied by his Duplo farm and also his sticker books.

Trip to Leavenworth Part 6 - Back to Minneapolis

Monday May 30, 2011

Memorial Day. Left Leavenworth at about 10 a.m. and had a nice sunny morning for the drive. Arrived back in Minneapolis at about 6 p.m.

Trip to Leavenworth Part 5 - Carnegie Library

Sam, Becky and the boys live not too far from an old Carnegie Library. The following is from Wikipedia:

"The Carnegie Arts Center of Leavenworth, Kansas is a private, non-profit, self-supporting organization. Located in its namesake city, the Center is housed in the old Leavenworth Public Library. Constructed in 1900 with funds donated by Andrew Carnegie, the two-story brick and limestone building was the first Carnegie Library in Kansas and is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places."
